Combinations that Lower Land Class Capability

If you are a beginner or not very confident in determining permeability and erosion, please return back to narrative or teaching card.

For those of you still here...

The main combination you need to be aware of with coarse textured soils is:

if you have a moderate slope, you will drop your Land Class to class IV

(shallow and very shallow coarse textured soils will not be used in contests)

For moderately coarse, medium, moderately fine and fine textured soils, 20" deep or deeper, these combinations need to be considered:

Very slow permeability with moderate slope is Class IV.
Very slow permeability with strong slope is Class VI.
Gentle slope with very slow permeability is Class III.
Gentle slope, moderate erosion is Class III.
Gentle slope, moderate erosion, very slow permeability is Class IV.

For moderately coarse, medium, moderately fine and fine textured soils, shallow, 10 to 20" deep, these combinations would be considered:

Nearly level or gently sloping with moderate erosion is Class IV.*
Moderate sloping is Class IV.
Strongly sloping is Class VI.

*Nearly level and moderate erosion can occur; but will not be used in a contest.
